ArtStart grants for arts students

Budding artists can receive a boost with an ArtStart grant. The ArtStart Program can help arts graduates to launch their professional artistic career with a grant of up to $10,000.

An ArtStart grant, from the Australia Council for the Arts, can help students to:

  • create a portfolio of work
  • promote their work
  • set up a studio space.

The grant is specifically for services, resources, skills development and equipment to help build an artistic career. It is not available to fund individual artworks, one-off shows, or living expenses.

Applicants are required to submit a proposal for how they will use the funding and to provide written references from three professional sources. Applications are assessed by a panel of peers and awarded on merit.

To be eligible for the ArtStart grant applicants must have completed an accredited Certificate IV arts course or higher in the past three years – or are about to complete one.

Round 2 closing dates for applications is 27 September 2011. Decisions will be advised in December 2011 with a funding period between 1 January 2012 – 31 December 2012.

Go to the ArtStart website to find out how to apply. The site also has profiles of successful applicants, FAQs, useful information about how to write the proposal, and links to other arts grants.
